Important notice regarding Mail conversion on shared servers

Right now, all our shared servers (except Same06, already in maildir format) store mail in mbox format which uses uwimap. Cpanel released a new format/structure for the email mailboxes. This is known as maildir format. It has been found that the this format is more effecient than the present mbox format. Also, we have encountered many issues with mails which is due to the mbox format that we are running now. So We have decided to go ahead with the conversion to maildir as a long term solution.


We are currently working slowly to upgrade all of the shared servers (except same06) to the maildir format, however, we will be doing this with one server per day to reduce confusion.

During the conversion process, you may experience intermittent issues with mail. We are aware of this and the problems will resolve themselves during the conversion. The conversion is done in alphabetical order by cpanel username. We will be doing this on all shared servers starting 16th of May 2007.

The maildir conversion process has become fairly foolproof, but it IS possible to loose e-mail stored on the server if things go horribly wrong.

Why are we converting mbox to mailbox:

The new system is a non-locking system. Mail is stored in individual files rather than in a single large mailbox. This eliminates both the lock files that are required under the current system and the problems associated with those locks if sessions are interrupted - an interruption under the new system will simply allow the user to resume retrieval when they connect again. Due to the manner in which mail is moved to the user’s space, mail can also be delivered even if retrieval is currently underway. The resource usage under the new system is also significantly lower than under the current system, and will solve solve administrative-related issues we can see on servers that handle the largest volume of mail within the network.
